Colonels rally from eight-point first half deficit to beat Wayne County for the first time in 20 years 

WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County’s captured its first win over Wayne County in 20 years after defeating the Cardinals, 61-52, on Tuesday.

Led by Bryson Mahan’s 19 points, the Colonels (1-0) rallied from a 35-27 halftime deficit to defeat Wayne County. Whitley County outscored the Cardinals, 34-17, in the second half. 

Aaron Rowe and Riley Fuson each added 10 points apiece while Dee Parker chipped in eight points.

“Great team win for our guys,” Swords said. “That’s our first win versus Wayne County in 20 years. We hit adversity all night but our guys kept competing. Our defense in the 2nd half really picked up and that has to be our identity. 

“This group is fun to coach, and we will only continue to get better,” he added. “Our guys made all the effort plays and I’m extremely proud of our team.”

Whitley County will be back in action Friday on the road against Lynn Camp.
