Corbin sophomore quarterback Kade Elam turned out to be a one-man wrecking crew during the Redhounds’ 45-7 blowout road win over Somerset on Friday.
After only passing for 46 yards, and an interception last week, Elam had his way with the Briar Jumper defense, throwing for three touchdowns and while rushing for two more in the Redhound win.
Corbin (5-0) will be off next week due to a bye before traveling to Simon Kenton to play the Pioneers on Friday, Oct. 30.
The Redhounds struck first to begin the game.
Kade Elam marched Corbin downfield and capped off his team’s first offensive drive to give the Redhounds a 7-0 lead at the 9:14 mark of the first quarter.
After stopping Somerset on its first offensive series of the game, the Redhounds took over, and scored again.
Elam hit Mark Warren for a 16-yard touchdown connection, pushing Corbin’s lead to 14-0 with six minutes remaining in the opening period.
Elam continued the hot hand on the Redhounds’ third offensive series by throwing his second touchdown pass of the contest, a 46-yarder to Carter Stewart, giving his team a commanding 21-0 lead with 2:13 left in the first quarter.
After seeing Zander Curry force a turnover for a third consecutive game, Corbin took over at the Briar Jumpers’ 18-yard line, and eventually scored on a 39-yard field goal from Jacob Baker, increasing the Redhounds’ edge to 24-0 entering the second quarter.
An interception by Corbin’s Joe West Lester set up another Redhound touchdown as Elam’s third touchdown pass, a six-yarder to Cameron Combs gave their team a comfortable 31-0 lead with nine minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Elam added his second rushing touchdown of the game late in the first half while extending Corbin’s lead to 38-0.
Somerset added a touchdown late in the game after Corbin coach Tom Greer had decided to rest his starters.
