PINEVILLE — Whitley County recorded a big road win against a regional opponent on Thursday to keep its perfect record intact at 2-0.
The Lady Colonels outlasted Pineville, 61-56, behind Maddy Hopkins’ 22-point scoring effort while Jonna Rice added 13 points, Aubree Clemens finished with 11 points, and Khylea Ray Collier finished with 10 points.
“I am extremely proud of our kids and coaches,” Whitley County coach Michael Petrey said. “We battled foul trouble the entire game and found a way to come away with a win on the road. Pineville is always a challenging to place to win. They do a really good job with their team.
“We have a lot of things we need to improve on, but I was pleased to see we made plays when they had to made,” he added. “For the second consecutive game, we shot 70 percent from the free-throw line as a team and that is an aspect of the game we want to see continued improvement. We will get back in the gym tomorrow and get ready for Cosby, Tenn. on Saturday.”
