WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County rolled to its third consecutive win, handing Cosby, Tenn. a 67-56 loss on Saturday.
The Lady Colonels continue to live up to their preseason hype, building a 30-24 lead at halftime and never looking back.
Jonna Rice recorded her 500th career rebound in the win, led Whitley County (3-0) with 20 points while hitting 12-of-14 shot attempts from the free-throw line.
“Great win for our first home game,” Whitley County coach Michael Petrey said. “Cosby competed extremely hard and played aggressive defense. Although we turned it over some we did a good job handling their pressure and a finishing plays. We had some players step up and give us big minutes today when we got in a little foul trouble. It is early in the season and we have a lot of things we have to clean up.
“We are proud of the way our team is coming together and competing,” he added. “We continue to have multiple players score in double digits. Congratulations to Jonna Rice on recording her 500th rebound. Jonna comes in ready to work everyday and does exactly what we ask her to do.”
Rice took over during the game’s final eight minutes, scoring 10 points while hitting on all six of her attempts from the free-throw line.
Aubree Clemens added 17 points in the win while scoring eight of those in the fourth quarter. Autumn Sawyers scored 10 points while Maddy Hopkins finished with nine points. Khylea Ray Collier added eight points while Cambree Price chipped in two points.
The Lady Colonels will hit the road on Tuesday, traveling to play Owsley County.
