Moser, Thompson combine for 64 points to lead Pineville to program-first WYMT Mountain Classic win

HAZARD — Pineville’s first trip to the WYMT Mountain Classic was a successful one.

The Mountain Lions came close in defeating Breathitt County on Tuesday before really of their first-ever win in the tournament on Wednesday by defeating Prestonsburg, 79-72.

Led by Ashton Moser’s 35-point, six-rebound effort, Pineville improved to 2-1. Sawyer Thompson added 29 points, 14 rebounds, and seven steals in the win.

“Tonight we got the first win in the WYMT Mountain Classic in program history,” Pineville coach Brad Levy said. “We were incredibly honored to be chosen to compete in this tournament and we’re proud of our guys for being the first group in school history to get that done. We’re going to get back to work and build on this experience going into the holidays.

“We had a quick turnaround and came out flat in the first half tonight and dug ourselves a hole we had to climb out of,” he added. “We started defending and executing much better toward the end of the third quarter and got in a rhythm.”
