Williamsburg off to first 4-0 start in 17 years

HAZARD — For the first time in 17 years, the Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets are off to a 4-0 start.

Williamsburg hit the road on Thursday and came away with an impressive, 52-21, win over Cordia, getting off to their best start dating back to the 2007-08 season under former coach Jim Rains.

“So great to have another win on a very long road trip,” Williamsburg coach Melissia Douglas said. “As a team, we struggled in the first half definsively and were a bit sluggish. We allowed them to change the pace of our game and that’s never good.

“At the half, I had six players with two fouls a piece and with small numbers it can be challenging,” she added. “The ladies came out though in the second half and played their pace. Hannah Creekmore tonight played great offensively and shot very well. Presley Spicer had another great night with double digits. Another senior, Lorelei Coleman is daily overcoming challenges with recovery but proved she to can be on the leaderboard. These ladies are very exciting to watch and everyone is playing to their role. It’s still early and we are just learning a lot about the game but it’s so nice to see them apply the skills from practices to game nights.”

The Lady Yellow Jackets took a 12-4 lead in the first quarter and led 25-11 at halftime.

They outscored Cordia, 21-2, in the third quarter to wrap-up the win.

Hannah Creekmore led Williamsburg with 18 points while Presley Spicer finished with 15 points. Braylee Evans scored seven points while Lorelei Coleman tossed in six points.
