Fuson’s 31-point night leads to Whitley County’s first 5-0 start in 14 years

WILLIAMSBURG — They may be young and learning on the fly, but it doesn’t seem to faze the Whitley County Colonels at all. Eric Swords’ talented young squad improved to 5-0 for the first time in 14 years after defeating Jackson County, 75-59, during the Burr Haynes Classic on Friday.

Led by the freshmen trio of Riley Fuson, Bryson (Tootie) Mahan, and Levi Jackson, Whitley County jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Fuson torched the nets for a game-high 31 points while Mahan added 16 points, and Jackson chipped in 12 points.

“Great win for our guys,” Swords said. “We did a great job moving the basketball offensively. Our bigs, led by our big fella, Jase Meadors, did an excellent job on Ward.

“Tootie Mahan controlled the game offensively, he gets better each game for us,” he added. “Riley continues to put up big numbers offensively, doing it in a variety of ways. Garrett and Levi shot the ball well for us, Tuck and Dee did a great job defensively. This group is fun to coach, they care about each other and the way we play shows that. It was great to honor Coach Burr Haynes tonight as he is a Colonel legend. We are back at it tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. against a very athletic Marion County team.”
