LONDON — South Laurel played its first game at home this season, and came away with an impressive, 46-38, win over Southwestern.
The Lady Cardinals improved to 2-1 with the win, and will be back in action Saturday in the Third Annual Lisa Collins Classic.
South Laurel, Boyle County, Owsley County, Pulaski County, Pikeville, Martin County, Casey County, Pineville, Wayne County and Henry Clay will be participating in the event.
“Once again, we played a very solid defensive game,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. “Held their leading scorer to two points and held them to 12 points in first half.
“We shot the ball poorly from 3-point line and free-throw line, (going) 3-of-12 and 11-of-24. There are nights when shots don’t fall but there can never be a night when defense doesn’t show up. Defense will always travel. Proud of my team and proud of my South Laurel community.”
The Lady Cardinals turned in another stellar defensive effort, limiting the Lady Warriors to only five field goals and 12 points in the first half while building a nine-point advantage.
South Laurel took a 30-21 edge into the fourth quarter before holding on in the final eight minutes.
Skeeter Mabe led the Lady Cardinals with 14 points while Maci Messer delivered 13 points. Callie Jones added seven points while Jamie Buenaventura distributed six points.
