WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County coach Eric Swords recognized the challenge ahead when his team hosted Marion County on Saturday during the Burr Haynes Classic.
Just minutes after watching his squad secure a victory against Jackson County less than 24 hours before the matchup with the Knights, Swords acknowledged that his team had a tough battle ahead.
He was right.
The two teams fought hard throughout Saturday’s game, with Marion County emerging victorious with a 62-59 win over the Colonels, who fell to 5-1 following the contest.
Bryson Mahan finished with 13 points while Riley Fuson scored 12 points while Levi Jackson chipped in 10 points.
“Tough loss for us, Marion County has a good athletic team,” Swords said. “We lead from the second quarter until about four minutes left. We allowed their quickness to speed us up a little bit. Rushed some shots and rushed the offense a little bit. Those are all things we can work on and get better at.
“As bad as we shot it, we had two chances in the last 30 seconds to tie the game, but just came up short,” he added. “We got another tough test coming up on Monday at Clay County. We got a tough stretch but these types of games will only help us become better.”
Whitley County will have a day off before hitting the road Monday to face-off against Clay County.
