BARBOURVILLE — Williamsburg entered Monday’s matchup against 13th Region Class A rival Barbourville riding a perfect 6-0 record.
But they left with a disappointing 72-61 loss, as the Tigers stunned the Yellow Jackets.
Barbourville by no means is a pushover, though.
Chris Taylor’s squad is now 4-1 and winners of two straight since its loss to Oneida Baptist last week.
“Tough one for us tonight,” Williamsburg coach Anthony Hibbard said. “Our slow start finally caught up to us. Credit Coach Taylor and Barbourville. They came out with a lot of intensity and put together a really good first quarter. “Obviously, not the result we wanted, however we really like how we finished the game,” he added. “We could have easily folded, but we fought back and made it a contest. Really proud of my guys for responding like that. I’m excited to get back after it tomorrow.”
The Tigers took control of the matchup in the first quarter as Riley Corey scored eight of his 17 points to give his team a 20-4 lead. Barbourville held a 28-13 advantage at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter.
Taylor’s squad led 53-32 entering the fourth quarter, and held off a late rally by Williamsburg.
The Tigers hit 16-of-23 free throw attempts while the Yellow Jackets were 29-of-40.
Eathan Fisher led Barbourville with 18 points while Conner Saylor scored 18 points for Williamsburg and Nate Goodin finished with 15 points.
