Lady Cardinals limit Raceland to lowest point total of the season during 47-30 win

MOUNT STERLING — Tod Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals turned in another impressive display of defensive play during their 47-30 win over previously unbeaten Raceland (4-1) in Friday’s Gateway Holiday Classic.

South Laurel (4-1) has now held its opponents to at least 30 points twice this season and under 40 points three times.

“Good defensive effort once again,” Windlan said. “Their leading scorer, Naomi Maynard, was held to four points in the first half and came in averaging 28.5 points per game. She ended with 14 points. We had some defensive mistakes on her in second half.

“We rebounded the ball well and shared the ball well but shot the ball poorly,” he added “Proud of our kids for learning a new system and adjusting to it.  Love our program and community. Go South Cards.”

The Lady Cardinals dominated from the get-go, limiting the Lady Rams to only two points in the first quarter and six points in the first half while holding a 24-6 lead.

South Laurel extended its cushion to 37-19 entering the fourth quarter.

Eight players scored in the win for the Lady Cardinals as Maci Messer led the way with 10 points while Jamie Buenaventura and Callie Jones added seven points apiece.

South Laurel will be back in action Saturday against unbeaten Mason County (8-0).
