Williamsburg edges Middlesboro, wins second thriller in a row

CORBIN — For the second consecutive night, Anthony Hubbard’s Williamsburg Yellow Jackets managed to pull off a thrilling win during the Wildcat Classic.

Reece Hatcher’s buzzer beater gave the Yellow Jackets a two-point victory on Thursday while Williamsburg slipped past Middlesboro with a 65-64 victory on Friday.

Conner Saylor led the Yellow Jackets (8-1) with 18 points while Andrew Smith followed with 17 points, and Cooper Prewitt finished with 14 points.

“Gritty win for us tonight,” Hibbard said. “We came out really strong out the gate and shot the ball incredibly well. Middlesboro did not relent or fade away. It was a back and forth game all night. We feel like we are very conditioned, however, we have few guys battling illness. Nate Goodin was out as well tonight and he’s been very valuable to us.

“Combine those factors with the fatigue from last night’s win and we are delighted with the end result,” he added. “We did not perform at our best, but we found a way to win. All in all, we feel blessed to add another notch to that win column.”

Bryson Brooks led Middlesboro (2-5) with 21 points while Joseph Killion had 15 points.
