LOUISVILLE — South Laurel overcame a slow start during its comeback form behind win over No. 3 Trinity on Thursday, but a 15-3 run by North Oldham in the second quarter proved to be key during Friday’s King of the Bluegrass.
The Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 5-1, after a 61-46 loss to North Oldham.
“Playing these games will help us down the road,” South Laurel coach Jeff Davis said. “We just had a bad second quarter but we came out in the second half and played them even. Just have to learn from this and understand how to handle those situations better. They’re a really good team and well-coached.”
South Laurel only trailed, 14-12, at the end of the first quarter, but was outscored by North Oldham, 21-7, in the second quarter giving the Mustangs a 35-19 halftime lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Cardinals finished 16-of-41 from the floor, including a 4-of-18 effort from 3-point range. They also connected 10-of-17 from the free-throw line while getting out-rebounded, 25-24.
Jordan Mabe led South Laurel with 18 points, and five assists on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor while Colton Rawlings added 11 points while hitting 3-of-6 shot attempts from 3-point range.
