South Laurel falls short in Gateway Holiday Classic title game 

MOUNT STERLING — Tod Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals came up short in their quest of winning the Gateway Holiday Classic championship, falling to Montgomery County in Sunday’s title game, 46-43.

The Lady Cardinals (5-2) hung tough throughout the contest, falling behind 17-12, in the first quarter and, 27-21, at halftime.

They battled back in the third quarter, tying the game at 36 apiece before Montgomery County outscored them 10-7 in the fourth quarter.

Got off to a poor start on defensive end in 1st quarter. Correct some errors and played solid defense rest of game.

“Our kids fought hard and had our chances but didn’t get the job done,” Windlan said. “Games like this will make us better down the road and being able to execute better in certain situations. As always proud of our kids and Cardinal community. Go Cards.”

Maci Messer led South Laurel with 14 points while Skeeter Made had nine points and Jones chipped in eight points.
