Lady Cardinals’ struggles at the free-throw line plays big role in 47-42 loss to Scott

SCOTTSVILLE — Struggles at the free-throw line played a big role in South Laurel’s, 47-42, loss to Scott on Saturday.

The Lady Cardinals (5-3) shot 47.1 percent from the floor (16-of-34), but connected on only 8-of-17 shot attempts from the free-throw line that ended up playing a big role in their loss.

The game was close throughout with South Laurel holding a 13-11 edge at the end of the first quarter. Scott took a 22-19 edge into the locker room at halftime before holding a 35-30 lead with eight minutes remaining.

“We fought hard, didn’t quit, but cannot continue to shoot free throws so poorly,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. We were 8-of-17 — cannot win close games with that shooting percentage. We play at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow versus North Hardin.”

Skeeter Mabe led the Lady Cardinals with 13 points while Maci Messer finished with 12 points. Jamie Buenaventura added nine points.

South Laurel will be back in action Sunday at 12:45 p.m. against North Hardin.
