LONDON — A nine-day layoff didn’t keep Eddie Mahan’s Lady Jaguars from recording a 67-40 win over Ashland Blazer on Monday.
The Lady Jaguars, ranked No. 4 in the state, are 10-0 for the first time in program history.
Just how dominant has North Laurel been?
Their closest margin of victory was a 15-point victory over Tennessee’s Harpeth Hall High School.
Against Ashland Blazer, Mahan received a total team effort with senior Brooke Nichelson leading the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Haley Combs had nine points, Mariella Claybrook, Bella Mahan, and Emma Carl adding eight points apiece. Bella Sizemore finished with seven points while Bella Lewis finished with three points.
“Ashland is a very good team but is also missing a key piece of their team in senior EKU commit Kenleigh Woods, who has been out all season up to this point,” Mahan said. “I hope she is back to playing by the time we play them at their place. Even without her though they are a very physical team and have some very good shooters as well.
“You could tell I had gave our team off six days and our conditioning is not where it needs to be but to me the days off for the girls is good in the long run. It seemed like because of our conditioning we couldn’t keep our consistency and thus couldn’t make the big push to really put them away.
“Brooke Nichelson had another good game even though her free throws were off she still ended with 24 and 10,” he added. “Mariella Claybrook anchors our defense and had nine rebounds against a very physical team. I also love seeing that we had six players with six or more points. Emma Carl and Bella Mahan both played key roles coming off of the bench. Their improvement and great play makes this one of the deepest teams I have had.”
