Cardinals finish Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic with 52-47 setback to Pulaski County

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. — South Laurel finished its two weeks of participating in holiday tournaments on Monday with a 52-47 setback to Pulaski County in the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic.

The Cardinals posted a 2-4 mark during the past two weeks, which included their five-point loss to the Maroons.

“Another tough game that I have to do a better job of getting our guys in position to finish games off,” South Laurel coach Jeff Davis said. “Guys are playing their tails off and playing together. Just need to get back and practice on the little things that are hurting us. This break is what we needed and the competition was really good. But if we don’t get better, then it was all for not.

“I know this bunch wants to get better and know they will continue to work hard,” he added. “Again, it’s me and I have to do a better job. These games are on me.”

South Laurel (6-4) started off on the right foot, building a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, but Pulaski County stormed back in the second quarter and tied the game at 24 apiece at halftime.

The Cardinals trailed 41-38 entering the fourth quarter after the Maroons’ Gavin Cook hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter, allowing his team to pull ahead.

Cook added two more 3-pointers in the final eight minutes, allowing his team to secure the win. He finished with a game-high 22 points and six 3-pointers.

Jordan Mabe led South Laurel with 20 points while Josh Steele finished with 12 points, and Kaiden McQueen added eight points. Colton Rawlings chipped in seven points.
