Pineville advances in 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic Tournament with 57-49 win over Williamsburg

CORBIN — Pineville’s duo of Sawyer Thompson and Ashton Moser proved to be too much for Williamsburg during Saturday’s first round action of the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic Tournament.

Thompson scored 19 points while Moser added 17 points to lead the Mountain Lions to a 57-49 win over the Yellow Jackets.

Pineville also had Cam Puckett score in double figures. He finished with 10 points.

Williamsburg’s Andrew Smith continued his impressive play, tossing in a game-high 25 points while Conner Helton added nine points.

“Proud of our guys today,” Williamsburg coach Anthony Hibbard said. “Obviously, not the result we wanted, but we feel we took a step forward today. We executed better today than we have all year. We just have to continue to piece it together. We are making strides in the right direction and that is very important this time of year as we have some tough games coming up.”

The Yellow Jackets held an 8-6 lead after the first quarter, but five points by Puckett in the second quarter, combined by four points apiece by Thompson and Moser allowed Pineville to tie the game at 21 apiece entering halftime.

Thompson caught fire in the third quarter, scoring nine points while Moser added four points and Puckett hit a 3-pointer to give the Mountain Lions a 41-32 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Williamsburg’s Smith scored 13 points in the fourth quarter while Helton added five points but Pineville hit 8-of-10 free throw attempts to secure the win.
