HARLAN — Whitley County had hopes of advancing to the Kentucky 2A, Section 7 title game, but fell short in its quest, falling to Harlan County, 54-52.
The Lady Colonels led throughout the contest, but couldn’t hold on for the win.
Whitley County took control of the game in the first quarter, jumping out to an 18-9 lead before taking a 27-24 advantage into the locker room at the half.
Both teams continued to battle during the third quarter with the Lady Colonels holding a 41-38 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
The final eight minutes turned out to be a rollercoaster for both teams.
Whitley County continued to hold the lead until Lady Black Bear freshman Kylie Runions caught the hot hand and scored 13 of her 19 points in the final eight minutes. She also hit two of her four 3-pointers during the period as well.
The Lady Colonels stayed close by hitting 9-of-10 of their free throw attempts.
Reagan Clemens had a big game for Harlan County, finishing with 17 points while hitting five 3-pointers while Jaylee Cochran hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 points.
Whitley County’s Aubree Clemens led all scorers with 20 points while Khylea Ray Collier added 12 points and Maddy Hopkins finished with nine points. Jonna Rice also added eight points.
