WILLIAMSBURG — Michael Petrey’s Whitley County Lady Colonels turned in one of their best efforts of the season, getting a key district win with a convincing 59-14 win over Williamsburg.
Jonna Rice led the Lady Colonels with 17 points while Maddie Hopkins scored 10 points. Aubree Clemens followed with nine points.
The win improved Whitley County to 10-4 overall, and 1-0 against 50th District opponents. The Lady Yellow Jackets fell to 5-8 and 0-1 in district play.
“Really proud of our girls defensive effort tonight,” Petrey said. “That has been a point of emphasis for us in practice and they really responded. Jonna Rice had a great game offensively and defensively. Aubree Clemens guarded their post about as good as we can ask for and she was big on the boards. It was good to be back at home and start district play with a win.”
Rice got hot in the first quarter, scoring 11 points as the Lady Colonels built a 17-0 lead. Clemens added seven points while scored seven points in the second quarter while Rice added six points to push Whitley County’s lead to 36-4 at halftime.
The Lady Colonels secured the win by outscoring Williamsburg, 16-10, in the second half.
Three players led the Lady Yellow Jackets in scoring with four points apiece.
