Defense leads the way as South Laurel stuns Corbin with 52-32 win

CORBIN — Road district wins are always hard to come by, but South Laurel found a way, and picked up a huge one at Corbin on Monday.

The Lasy Cardinals limited Corbin to its lowest point output of the season, stunning the Lady Redhounds with a 52-32 win.

The win improved South Laurel to 9-4 and 1-0 in 50th District play while the Lady Redhounds, fresh off winning the Kentucky 2A, Section 7 title just a day before, fell to 12-3 and 0-1 against district opponents.

“Great win for our program and community,” South Laurel coach Todd Windlan said. “Super proud of my players and coaches. Our defense was outstanding all night. Corbin is a great team and to hold them to 32 points is an amazing effort from our kids.

“Maci Messer had 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists,” he added. “Skeeter Mabe had 11 points, and seven rebounds, and was a great floor general for us tonight. Jamie Buenaventura finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Callie Jones hit two huge 3s in the third quarter and finished with seven points and three assists. But the spark for us tonight was Aubrey Bundy and her toughness and defense while scoring five points, and finishing with five rebounds, four steals and four assists. We must continue to get better and work hard as we have Whitley County at home Friday in a big 50th district game! Go Cards.”

The Lady Cardinals held leads of 11-10, 26-18, and 42-29 at the end of the first, second, and third quarters respectively before outscoring Corbin, 10-3, in the final eight minutes to secure the win.

Macie Messer led South Laurel with 19 points while Skeeter Mabe had 11 points, and Jamie Buenaventura finished with 10 points.

Kylie Clem and Raegan Walker led the Lady Redhounds with 12 points apiece.
