LONDON — A dozen and counting.
Eddie Mahan’s North Laurel Lady Jaguars improved to a program-best 12-0 after defeating Southwestern, 63-44, on Tuesday.
The Lady Jaguars had an 11-day layoff but still managed to build 21-9 lead in the first quarter while never looking back.
“It was could to get to play again,” Mahan said. “After a week of cancellations and no make ups it’s good to play. Southwestern is a good team and has been trending in the right direction. We knew we would have to get the rust off quickly. We did a good job in the first half and it was a defense setting the tone.”
North Laurel’s lead grew to 41-21 at halftime before a 10-3 run in the third quarter out the game out of reach.
Brooke Nichelson led the way with 22 points while Haley Combs and Mariella Claybrook added 11 points apiece. Bella Sizemore scored seven points while Paisley Kilburn and Bella Mahan added three points apiece. Emma Carl added two points in the win.
“The second half we didn’t have a good third quarter and that was a lack of focus and then the fourth quarter was us trying to develop some depth,” Mahan said. “We have a starter out injured for a couple of weeks and that creates a good opportunity for us to find some quality minutes.
“Haley Combs had a great game especially in the first half,” he added. “Her presence was felt on both offense and defense. We need her to continue with that type of play going into the second half of the season. Mariella Claybrook did a tremendous job finishing around the basket and shooting the three. Brooke Nichelson had a good game, but like always, proved why she is one of the best players in the state. She had multiple moves to the basket that I believe she is the only player in the state who can complete.”
