WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County’s came out firing on all cylinders in the first half of its 50th District battle with Williamsburg, and never looked back as the Colonels cruised to an 83-68 win.
Eric Swords’ squad built a 28-10 advantage in the first quarter and led 42-25 at halftime before putting the game away in the second half.
“Great district win for us,” Swords said. “We came out and set the tone in the first quarter. Williamsburg has a veteran senior team, and made us continue to have to play. Our kids did a great job responding to any run they tried to make. We still got to take care of the basketball and knock down our free throws.
“Great learning experience for our squad,” he added. “I thought multiple young guys stepped in and played huge minutes when we were in foul trouble. We’ve got three straight games coming up with top 25 level teams in the state so it will be a huge test.”
Bryson Mahan led Whitley County (12-3 overall, 1-0 vs. 50th District opponents) with 26 points while Levi Jackson added 24 points. Dee Parker added 14 points in the win.
Andrew Smith led Williamsburg (11-3, 0-1) with 22 points while Conner Saylor added 14 points and Nate Goodin chipped in 12 points.
