LONDON — South Laurel held Whitley County to its second lowest point total of the season during the Lady Cardinals’, 42-33, win on Friday.
The win improved South Laurel to 10-4 and 2-0 in district play while the Lady Colonels falls to 10-5, and 1-1.
The win marked the second straight game the Lady Cardinals’ have held a district opponent to 33 points or less.
“Hard fought battle in a game we didn’t particularly play well but hats off to Whitley County they had something to do with it,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. “Thought Skeeter Mabe stepped up and hit some big shots for us in the second half. Callie Jones played a very good second half hitting some 3s and free throws late.
“The unsung hero is Aubrey Bundy,” he added. “She didn’t score a point but her heart and grit showed tonight as she was all over the place get steals and making key defensive plays.”
Great to get a 50th District win and we need to continue to get better. Go Cards.”
South Laurel had three players lead the way with 12 points apiece — Skeeter Mabe, Maci Messer, and Callie Jones.
Maddy Hopkins led Whitley County with 12 points while Aubree Clemens finished with eight points.
“Tough loss for us tonight,” Whitley County coach Michael Petrey said. “It is really hard to win on the road in the 50th District, if you turn the basketball over. I felt like our defensive effort was good for three quarters of the game. They were able to get some easy baskets in the third quarter and our offensive production that quarter was low. I’ve got to do a better job making sure we are competing every possession. We will continue to work and get better every day.”
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half with South Laurel clinging to a 6-5 edge.
The Lady Cardinals held at 17-16 lead at halftime before building a 32-24 cushion entering the fourth quarter.
