Lady Cardinals’ defensive play stifles another region opponent

LONDON — Playing consecutive days didn’t seem to be a bother for Tod Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals during Saturday’s Roy Bowling Classic.

South Laurel captured its sixth consecutive win thanks to another gritty defensive effort, defeating Harlan County, 57-18.

“We were mentally ready to play and got off to a great start leading 21-3 at end of first quarter and eventually, 33-3,” Windlan said. “Our kids played with a purpose and it was fun to see especially with Coach (Roy) Bowling watching us.

“Jamie Buenaventura had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds,” he added. “Maci Messer had 11 points, Callie Jones nine and Skeeter Mabe had eight points and some beautiful passes in transition to set us up for easy baskets. Our bench played well as they scored 14 points. Proud of the way my kids played tonight and great way to celebrate the Roy Bowling Classic. Another 50th District game on Tuesday at Williamsburg. Go Cards.”

The win improved South Laurel to 11-4 while the Lady Black Bears fell to 4-12.
