WILLIAMSBURG — Despite being held scoreless in the first quarter while her team trailed throughout the contest against Whitley County in the 50th District rivalry on Monday, Lady Redhound senior Kylie Clem refused to back down.
She dominated in the final three quarters, scoring a game-high 32 points, including all 23 of her team’s points in the second half, with 16 points coming in the fourth quarter, leading Corbin to a 47-40 victory over the Lady Colonels.
“Sometimes you just have to find a way to win and I believe that’s the best way to describe our performance tonight,” Corbin coach Isaac Wilson said. “Give credit to Whitley County. I thought they did a great job of making some things tough on us on the offensive end as they possess some nice length and can protect the basket.
“I give my kids credit as they continued to grind and find a way to win in the fourth quarter which you have to be able to do in order to be a good basketball team,” he added. “Any time you can win in the 50th District it’s a good thing, but it’s even bigger when you can get a road win within the district. I say it each year that I believe the 50th District is the toughest district within our region and it’s games like tonight that prepare you for a good postseason run. We can enjoy this one for tonight and we gotta get focused for our next opponent which is Southwestern on the road this coming Saturday.”
Clem hit three 3-pointers during the game’s final eight minutes while hitting 3-of-4 shot attempts, outscoring Whitley County, 16-6.
The Lady Redhounds trailed 14-11 at the end of the first quarter but managed to tie the game at 24 apiece at halftime.
The Lady Colonels outscored Corbin, 10-7, in the third quarter to take a 34-31 lead before Clem caught fire.
Raegan Walker added six points for the Lady Redhounds while Izzy Walker and Addy Wilson finished with three points apiece and Lydia King added two points. Sadie Mobley scored one point.
Aubree Clemens led Whitley County with 12 points while Jenna Rice and Maddy Hopkins scored eight points apiece.
The win improved Corbin to 13-4 while improving its district record to 1-1. The Lady Colonels are now 11-6 and 1-2 against district opponents.
