Lady Cardinals hold fourth consecutive opponent under 35 points, hand Williamsburg 76-30 loss 

WILLIAMSBURG — Today Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals captured their seventh consecutive win on Wednesday, rolling to an easy, 76-30, win over Williamsburg.

The Lady Yellow Jackets’ 30-point scoring output marked the eighth time South Laurel has held an opponent to under 35 points along with the fourth game in a row.

The win also improved the Lady Cardinals to 3-0 in 50th District play while Williamsburg fell to 6-9 overall and 0-2 against district opponents.

“I thought we came out with a purpose and executed very well on offense in the first half,” South Laurel  coach Todd Windlan said. “Winning on the road in the 50th District is always a good thing for your program. 

“Maci Messer led us in scoring with 18 while Jamie Buenaventura had 15, all in first half,” he added. “Skeeter Mabe had a great all around game with 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Callie Jones had nine points and our bench scored 19 points, led by Shelby Smith and Mia Hibbard with seven points apiece. We play tomorrow at Harlan County in a varsity only contest starting at 8 p.m. Go Cards!”

South Laurel took charge of the game in the first quarter with seven different players scoring during the period.

The Lady Cardinals took a 24-8 advantage into the second quarter while extending their lead to 52-17 at halftime. South Laurel led 69-26 entering the fourth quarter before pulling off the 46-point win.

Maci Messer led the Lady Cardinals with 18 points while Jamie Buenaventura added 15 points. Skeeter Mabe finished with 10 points while Callie Jones chipped in nine points.

Presley Spicer led the Lady Yellow Jackets with 13 points while three players scored four points apiece.

“Tonight, we may not have had the size or depth of our opponent but our team’s performance is a testament of resilience and confidence,” Williamsburg coach Melissia Douglass said. “Despite being the underdogs, they played with composure showing that skill and heart can compete. Their teamwork, focus, and belief in themselves,allowed them to accept tonight’s challenge with a greater intensity. We will continue to build and grow.”
