Cardinals pull away in the second half to pick 68-46 win over Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG — South Laurel held a 39-33 lead during the third quarter against upset-minded Williamsburg before finishing the game with a 29-13 run to pick up a 68-46 win on Wednesday.

It marked the first game the Cardinals were without starter Josh Steele, who suffered an injury during Saturday’s game against Clay County.

“Proud of how we responded tonight,” South Laurel coach Jeff Davis said. “Guys played hard and gave all they had. Our guys have been worried and hurting for Josh (Steele). We knew it would be rough but we got a huge spark from our bench. This bunch is unselfish and believes in each other. It will take some time but we will figure this out. We just have to keep playing for Josh and be there for our brothers.”

The Cardinals ran their overall record to 11-6 and their 50th District record to 2-1 with the win while the Yellow Jackets fell to 11-5, and 0-3.

Williamsburg built an 11-8 lead heading into the second quarter before South Laurel managed to take a 27-26 edge into the locker room at halftime.

Senior Jordan Mabe scored 10 points in the third quarter to help the Cardinals take a 53-36 cushion into the fourth quarter.

South Laurel hit 9-of-14 free throw attempts in the final eight minutes to wrap-up the win.

Mabe led the Cardinals with 22 points while Colton Rawlings added 15 points and Max Fullmer finished with 13 points.

Cooper Prewitt led Williamsburg with 11 points while Reece Hatcher added 10 points.
