Lady Cardinals continue to stifle opponents with defensive play

PINEVILLE — South Laurel turned in another stellar effort on defense, limiting an opponent to under 40 points for the 11th time this season.

The Lady Cardinals improved to 14-4 while holding every Bell County Lady Bobcat player to single digits in scoring during their 46-32 win on Saturday.

“Great 13th Region win on the road against a good Bell County team,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. “It was a total team effort. We played a very solid defensive game. Held (Lauren) McGeorge to seven points and (Kairi) Lamb to five, that was a huge key to our victory. Kids implemented the game plan very well and while we didn’t shoot the ball great we defended great.

“We were led in scoring by Maci Messer with 14 points and six rebounds, Callie Jones had 13 points, and five rebounds. Jamie Buenaventura had 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Aubrey Bundy had five points and five rebounds. Skeeter Mabe sat a lot of the first half in foul trouble. She did finish with four points, four assists, and two steals while doing a majority of our ball handling.”

The Lady Cardinals have a chance to clinch the 50th District’s top seed this week if they can pick up wins against Whitley County and Corbin. They are currently 3-0 against district opponents.

The loss dropped Bell County to 12-5. Lauren McGeorge led the Lady Bobcats with seven points while Nevaeh Allen and Kairi Lamb scored six points apiece.
