WILLIAMSBURG — Tod Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals continue to display some of the best defensive play in the state.
The Lady Cardinals improved to 15-4 and 4-0 in 50th District play after recording a 45-25 win over Whitley County on Tuesday.
The Lady Cardinals have now held opponents to under 40 points for the 12th time this season while also holding the Lady Colonels to their lowest scoring output of the season.
“Really proud of our team, great effort on the defensive end and followed the game plan in the first three quarters extremely well,” Windlan said. “Aubrey Bundy was tremendous tonight with her defense and had three, 3-point baskets in the first half to lead us. Maci Messer had 12 points, Bundy nine points,(Jamie) Buenaventura eight points, and seven rebounds. Skeeter Mabe had six points, five rebounds and five assists while Callie Jones had six points with six steals. Our Cards are back in action Friday at 6 p.m. at South Laurel versus Corbin.”
The Lady Cardinals limited Whitley County to only four field goals in the first half while building a 25-10 advantage.
The Lady Colonels (13-7, 1-3) only had one field goal in the third quarter and fell behind, 37-14, entering the final quarter of play.
“Tonight is on me,” Whitley County coach Michael Petrey said. “I’ve got to do better getting us prepared for games like tonight. South has a really good team and they were ready to compete from the tip.”
Maci Messer led South Laurel with 12 points while Aubrey Bundy added nine points with three, 3-pointers. Jamie Buenaventura added eight points.
Maddy Hopkins led Whitley County with 11 points while Aubree Clemens finished with nine points.
