Mabe comes up big to lead South Laurel past Bourbon County

EUREKA — Fresh off a big win over rival Corbin on Friday, South Laurel traveled north on Interstate-75 less than 24 hours later to face-off against Bourbon County.

The Cardinals reeled off a 62-52 win, improving to 15-6 during the process.

“Thought we played ok coming off a big game last night,” South Laurel coach Jeff Davis said. “Quick turnaround verses a really athletic team that can shoot it really well. 

“Really liked how our bench stepped up and played,” he added. “They did a good job tonight of providing a spark of energy. Still have to work on getting better at the little things. But overall, proud of our guys.”

Jordan Mabe continued his impressive play, scoring 24 points while Brendan Murphy hit two 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the win. Colton Rawlings added seven points while Blaine Baker finished with six points.

Bourbon County’s Marquis Ferguson kept his team in the game, scoring a game-high 28 points while hitting four 3-pointers.

The Cardinals led 18-12 after the first quarter thanks to Rawlings hitting two 3-pointers while Mabe added four points and Murphy connecting with a 3-pointer.

Kane scored six points in the second quarter, helping South Laurel push its lead to 34-22 at halftime. 

Bourbon County outscored the Cardinals, 16-8, in the third quarter, cutting its deficit to 42-38 with eight minutes remaining.

Mabe took over in the fourth quarter, scoring nine points, helping South Laurel to capture the 10-point win.
