Cardinals peaking at the right time; win important district game against Whitley County

Brooks Cawood’s South Laurel Cardinals are beginning to heat up at the right time.

With only two weeks remaining until district tournament play begins, the Cardinals locked up a huge district win on Tuesday, knocking off Whitley County, 3-1.

The Cardinals are winners of four of their last five games and saw their record improve to 7-6-2 overall and 2-2 against district opponents. The loss dropped Whitley County to 6-7 overall and 1-3 against district foes.

Daniel Campbell scored the Cardinals’ first goal to give his team a 1-0 lead at the 17 minute mark. Johnny Parra evened things at one apiece during the 22nd minute while Kevin de la Cruz’s goal at the 29th minute allowed South Laurel to take a 2-1 advantage at halftime.

Liam Zik added an insurance goal in the second half, allowing the Cardinals to pull out the two-goal win.
