Messer scores 22 points, hits four 3s as South Laurel cruises past Williamsburg 

WILLIAMSBURG — Tod Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals are moving on to the 13th Region Tournament, and the 50th District finals after recording an easy, 86-18, win over Williamsburg.

South Laurel (22-5) advances to Thursday’s 50th District Tournament finals where the Lady Cardinals will face the winner of Corbin and Whitley County.

The Lady Yellow Jackets end the season with a 7-19 mark.

“The South Laurel community showed up and supported our girls well today,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. “Proud of our community and team tonight. We got off to the start we wanted, pressured them into turnovers and executed our offense well.

“Maci Messer went over the 1,000 point mark in her career and finished with 22 points,” he added. “Callie Jones had 14, Jamie Buenaventura had 10, Kenzie Fannin nine, and Shelby Smith had eight. Our bench came in and did a nice job of not dropping off, scoring 30 points. We had 21 assists with Skeeter Mabe and Callie Jones lead us with four a piece.”

South Laurel shot the lights out in the first quarter, building a 29-6 lead behind Callie Jones’ eight points while Maci Messer added seven points.

Messer hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter while adding eight more points as the Lady Cardinals’ lead grew to 48-10 at halftime.

Two 3-pointers by Jones and five points by Messer gave South Laurel a 66-14 cushion entering the fourth quarter.

McKenzie Fannin added eight points in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Cardinals cruise to the 68-point win.

Messer finished with 22 points and four 3-pointers while Jones added 14 points, and Jamie Buenaventura chipped in 10 points.

Presley Spicer led Williamsburg with eight points.
