WEEK 6 PICK’EMS: Can Clay County go on the road and beat Harlan County?

Well, after having a subpar 5-5 record three weeks again, we’ve not turned our picks to the better, posting an 17-2 mark the past two weeks.

For the season, we are now 38-11 with out winning percentage sitting at .775 — not bad at all.

Week 6

Friday, Sept. 23

Game of the Week

Clay County (3-1) at Harlan County (3-2)

Something has to give Friday when the Tigers and Black Bears meet.

Clay County is riding a three-game win streak while Harlan County has won two in a row.

The Tigers are coming off a bye week while the Black Bears handed Pike Central a 58-21 loss.

This game is gonna be interesting for sure. Whoever has the ball last could very well win.

The two teams have played 10 times with Clay County coming away with its first win against Harlan County with a 40-20 victory.

Prediction: Look for a high-scoring affair in this matchup. The Black Bears are averaging more than 50 points per game the past two weeks while the Tigers have scored at least 40 points during their past three games.

Look for Harlan County to pull off a 54-48 win.

Williamsburg (3-0) at Somerset (3-2)

This is another interesting matchup.

Somerset had won the past eight meetings between the two teams before the Yellow Jackets claimed a 21-14 win last season.

Williamsburg had had two weeks get heal some injuries after receiving consecutive byes.

The Briar Jumpers took one on the chin, and dropped a 45-7 outcome to Corbin last week.

Prediction: We just can’t see Somerset suffering consecutive losses at home. The Briar Jumpers win, 28-20.

Sayre (3-1) at Harlan (3-1)

If you go by the RPI, and Harlan’s home field advantage, the Green Dragons enter the game as probably seven points favorites.

They are coming off their first loss of the season while the Spartans defeated Dayton last week, 14-6.

The two teams have only played once since 1998 with Sayre winning last season’s game, 42-0.

Prediction: This year’s game is going to be a whole lot closer than last years. We really want to go with Harlan but we also know Sayre isn’t a pushover.

But even with that said, we believe the Green Dragons will find a way to win. Harlan will get win No. 4 with a 28-14 victory.

Middlesboro (3-2) at Morgan County (1-4)

The Yellow Jackets have now strung together four consecutive wins with a road date against Morgan County coming up.

For the first time in three years these two teams will actually get to play one another instead of seeing the game cancelled due to COVID-19.

Middlesboro enters the contest riding a three-game win streak while beating Harlan, 21-20, last week.

Morgan County is just struggling. Plain and simple. It’s lone win was a 50-0 victory over Jackson County.

Prediction: Middlesboro should have little trouble in this one. Yellow Jackets roll, 49-14.

Whitley County (1-3) at Pulaski County (4-1)

The Maroons have owned this series dating back to 2009. Pulaski County has reeled off eight consecutive wins.

The Colonels have hung tough in each of their games this season but can’t seem to get over the hump. This game is important due to the district implications it could have as the season progresses.

Prediction: Pulaski County pulls away in the second half, winning, 42-18.

McCreary Central (1-4) at Bell County (3-1)

The Bobcats continue to dominate offensively but has struggled making stops on the defensive side of the ball.

We do expect the game to be close for maybe a quarter or two before the duo of Daniel Thomas and Dawson Woolum begin to take over.

Prediction: Bell County wins with ease, 49-12.

Berea (1-4) at Jackson County (0-5)

The Generals have really struggled this season. They’ve been outscored, 183-28, and currently have lost 10 games in a row and are 1-16 during their last 17 contests.

Prediction: Look for the Pirates to score early, and pull away in the end, winning, 34-12.

Lynn Camp (2-3) at Cumberland, Tenn.  (1-3)

This is going to be a tough one to pick. The Wildcats pick up with No. 2 last week by defeating Jackson County last week, 8-6.

Prediction: The Wildcats will attempt to win consecutive games for the first time since Nov. 2019. We don’t think they’ll get the win Friday, but we do believe it will be close, Cumberland wins, 20-14.

Thursday, Sept. 22

North Laurel (3-1) at South Laurel (0-5)

The rivalry between North and South is t a strong as it used to be.

The Jaguars have some big wins under their belts while South Laurel remains searching for win No. 1.

Prediction: If you go by recent history between the two teams, you’ll have to with North Laurel.

The Jaguars are winners of three straight against the Cardinals while winning 11 of their past 12 games against North Laurel.

Prediction: North Laurel. Look for the Jaguars to dominate, winning, 49-14
