MOUNT VERNON — Trey Smith’s South Laurel Cardinals are rolling, and for the second consecutive game, they won in late-inning fashion.
The Cardinals trailed 4-3 entering the fifth inning but pushed across a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at four apiece before Jamison West hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Jack Vaughn in the top of the seventh, eventually giving South Laurel a 5-4 win.
Trey Smith’s squad improves to 5-0, and will host Harlan County Thursday.
“I’m proud of our guys for the way they fought tonight,” Smith said. “Another great team win. Rockcastle played a great game against us tonight. Playing in these types of games will only make us better for the future. Keaton Creech did a great job coming in and shutting the door on the mound.”
Vaughn finished the game with two hits, an RBI, and one run scored while Waylon Hensley had two hits, and scored twice. Keaton Creech and Austin Byrd finished with a hit and an RBI apiece while West and Bryson Turner drove in a run apiece.
Turner tossed three innings, allowing five hits, and two earned runs while finishing with four Ks. Creech recorded the win, pitching four scoreless and hitless innings while striking out seven batters.
