It’s been an incredible season for Nate Valentine and his North Laurel Jaguars, and they show no signs of slowing down.
The Jaguars secured their spot in the UK HealthCare KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 quarterfinals with a narrow 54-53 victory over Breathitt County, thanks to junior Reece Davidson’s impressive performance, which included a game-high 36 points and nine rebounds.
This season hasn’t been without its challenges for North Laurel, but under the guidance of Valentine—who has won three region titles at North Laurel and an All ‘A’ Classic state championship at Lexington Christian Academy, and is recognized as one of the top coaches in the state — the Jaguars have navigated adversity and a tough schedule, making the most of every opportunity.
Even the players noted after North Laurel’s win over Breathitt County, that playing the tough schedule prepared them for games like Thursday’s against the Bobcats.
The battle-tested Jaguars rolled through the 49th District and captured the championship, and then went through one of the toughest roads a team can go through to win a region crown.
They lost to first round opponent Corbin twice, but responded with a big win, and then knocked off defending 13th Region champion, and state runner-up Harlan County in overtime before defeating South Laurel, who had beaten the Jaguars twice during the regular season, in overtime in the 13th Region title game.
Adversity reared its head once again today against Breathitt County when North Laurel had to come from behind numerous times, including a one-point deficit with four seconds remaining.
They entered the season as the No. 4 ranked team in the 13th Region, and proved all of their naysayers wrong. They’ll face another top notch opponent in Montgomery County on Friday, but Valentine and his Jaguars wouldn’t have it any other way — they’re just built different.
