LONDON — Home runs by Emma Carl, and Saige McClure combined with an impressive pitching effort by Tessa Monhollen proved to be enough to allow North Laurel to pull out a 3-2 win over Boyle County on Thursday.
“Another good win for our girls tonight,” North Laurel coach Chris Edwards said. “Boyle County is a well-coached team and they play a lot of small ball, bunting and stealing bases. Their record is deceiving because they are a quality team.
“Offensively, only five hits but we left seven runners on through the first three innings,” he added. “We were one big hit away from breaking it open early. Hats off to Boyle for keeping us at bay. Saige is the only player with multiple hits.
“Tessa was great in the circle tonight,” Edwards continued. “Only allowed four hits and really pitched a nice game. Another quality start from her. We played a pretty good game defensively. Bella Finley threw out two trying to steal and Katie Sams threw out one at the plate trying to score. We did have a couple of mistakes on plays we make more often than not but they didn’t hurt us. I’m really proud of how we responded tonight. Go Jags.”
The Lady Jaguars (17-4) fell behind 1-0 in the top of the third inning but a solo shot by McClure in the bottom half of the inning cut North Laurel’s deficit to 2-1.
Carl’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth turned out to be the game-winner, as Monhollen shut down the Lady Rebels’ bats during the final four innings.
McClure led the way with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored while Carl finished with a hit, two RBI, and a run scored. Monhollen also had a hit along with Bella Sizemore.
Monhollen tossed a complete game, allowing four hits, and two earned runs while striking out four batters.
