Clay digs too big of a hole early, falls to Johnson Central, 56-20

Clay County’s dug itself an early 28-0 hole and couldn’t recover during its 56-20 loss to district for Johnson Central.

The Tigers enter the game with a four-game win streak but couldn’t get their high-powered offensive attack going. Their 20-point output was the lowest point total they’ve scored this season.

Aiden Wagers’ one-yard touchdown runs cut Clay County’s deficit to 28-6 entering the second half.

Tate Rice’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Tyson Wagers made the score, 28-14, with 8:03 remaining in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles scored on an 82-yard touchdown run on its ensuing drive to make the score 35-14 before the Tigers’ Rice hit Brady Wolfe with a 13-yard touchdown pass to cut his team’s deficit to 35-20 with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter.

Johnson Central out the game away by scoring 21 unanswered points during the game’s final 13 minutes.
