BACK ON TOP: Grace Gibson’s goal during the final 20 seconds gives Corbin its first 49th District title since 2016

Grace Gibson’s 13th Region-leading 43rd goal turned out to be the biggest so far of the season as her goal with under 20 seconds remaining in regulation gave Corbin a thrilling 2-1 win over South Laurel during Thursday’s 49th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament championship.

The game was close throughout but Gibson found a way to score to give her team their first 49th District title since 2016.

After beginning the season with a 1-3 mark, Corbin quickly did a 360 and turned things around. The Lady Redhounds (14-4-1) are now 13-1-1 during their last 15 games.

“I honestly don’t even how words right now,” Corbin coach Hannah Goins said. “I’m just super proud of this team. They have worked so hard this season. It feels amazing to be district champions.

“It was a tough physical game,” she added. “South is a good team and we knew it would be a battle. I always say success is not given it is earned and these girls earned this. They were relentless tonight. They never let down and played their hearts out. As a coach, I couldn’t ask for better group of young ladies. We’ve had an amazing season so far and It’s not over yet! Im just extremely proud and can’t wait to see what we can accomplish in region.”

The Lady Cardinals (10-7) began the season with a 7-1 mark but have turned in a 3-6 record since.

Corbin took a 1-0 lead just 13 minutes into the match after a goal by Olivia Jones, and held the lead at halftime.

South Laurel managed to tie the contest at one apiece thanks to a goal from Josie Gill at the 58 minute mark in the second half.

The game remained tied at one-all until Gibson managed to find the back of the net to score the eventual game-winning goal.

The two teams will now advance to the 13th Region Girls’ Soccer Tournament.
