BACK ON TOP: Lady Redhounds capture first 13th Region championship since 2017 with 2-1 win over South Laurel

Hannah Goins’ Corbin Lady Redhounds captured the 13th Region Girls’ Tournament championship for the first time since 2017 by defeating South Laurel, 2-1, on Thursday.

Corbin (16-4-1) endured a late rally by South Laurel (11-8), a lightning delay along with rain falling throughout the match to get the win.

The Lady Redhounds began the season with a 1-3 mark which had many wondering if Corbin would make a run at the region crown.

Goins’ squad recovered and has posted an impressive 15-1-1 mark since, including three one-goal wins over South Laurel.

Both teams failed to score in the first half but Corbin took a 1-0 lead after Grace Gibson scored her program-record 51st goal with 23 minutes remaining in regulation.

Mary Simons added a goal six minutes later to push the Lady Redhounds’ advantage to 2-0.

The Lady Cardinals didn’t fold, though.

A goal by Belle Dotson at the 66-minute mark cut South Laurel’s deficit to 2-1 but the Lady Cardinals couldn’t get any closer.

Due to a higher RPI rating, Corbin will host 14th Region champion Estill County on either Oct. 17 or Oct. 18. The date and time of the match hasn’t been released yet.

The two teams met on Aug. 30 at Corbin with the Lady Redhounds coming away with an 8-2 victory.
