The Corbin Redhound eighth grade squad captured its sixth consecutive KYMSFA region championship by holding on to defeat Wayne County, 36-32.
The Redhounds led throughout the contest and out the game away with a late touchdown by Trey Person.
Corbin fell behind 8-0 in the first quarter before tying the game at eight apiece (7:24) in the second quarter behind a three-yard run by Clay Akins.
Person broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown run with 4:32 remaining in the first half, pushing his team’s lead to 16-8.
The Cardinals attempted to score right before halftime but the Redhound defense made a goal line stand, allowing Corbin to take a 16-8 edge into the locker room at halftime.
Person’s second rushing touchdown, a 17-yarder, pushed the Redhounds’ lead to 22-8 with 1:12 remaining before seeing Wayne County add a touchdown.
Akins added his second rushing touchdown, a 10-yard run, with 7:03 left in regulation to pushing Corbin’s lead to 28-16.
Wayne County cut its deficit to 28-24 with 6:30 left in the fourth quarter but Person’s third rushing touchdown, a 53-yarder, wrapped up the win for the Redhounds.
