Today is the day.
With all of the hoopla almost over, both unbeaten Corbin and three-time defending Class 4A state champion Boyle County are ready to do battle today at Kroger Field with kick-off slated 8 p.m.
That’s right, there will be no more Tom Greer vs. Justin Haddix story lines or Haddix vs. his old team headlines, it’s time to play the game.
Corbin will enter the contest with an unblemished 14-0 record and favorite while possessing Class 4A’s top RPI rating at .75319.
The Rebels (12-2) RPI rating is second best in Class 4A at .68600.
Corbin owns a 4-3 record all-time against the Rebels with wins in 1977 (37-15), 1982 (28-13), 1992 (10-7), and 2018 (21-0).
Boyle County defeated the Redhounds in 1994 (14-7) 2010 (42-10), and 2017 (40-21).
The Redhounds are 83-42 in postseason play while Boyle County is 89-23. Corbin owns a 4-3 record all-time against the Rebels with wins in 1977 (37-15), 1982 (28-13) 1992 (10-7), and 2018 (21-0).
Boyle County defeated the Redhounds in 1994 (14-7) 2010 (42-10), and 2017 (40-21).
The Rebels are winners of 12 straight playoff games in a row, and post a 24-2 mark in postseason play dating back to 2017.
Corbin averages 42.4 points per game while the Rebels score 39.2 points per game.
The Redhounds are only surrendering 12.2 points per game while Boyle County is giving up 15.2 points per game.
With that said, Corbin is surrendering 28 points per game during its last two contests while the Rebels are allowing 21 points per game.
Taking a closer look at Corbin
Offensively, the Redhounds are led by sophomore quarterback, Kade Elam.
Elam has completed 146-of-202 passes this season while throwing for 2,306 yards, and 31 touchdowns.
He’s also ran for 476 yards and 12 scores.
Cameron Combs leads the Redhounds with 1,315 rushing yards while finding pay dirt 17 times.
Cole Stevens (272 rushing yards, three touchdowns), Zander Curry (256, 4), and Brody Wells (196, 2) are also threats in the backfield.
Elam’s main receiving target is Carter Stewart. He leads the team with 50 receptions for 1,033 yards, and nine touchdowns. Wells has 26 catches for 389 yards, and eight touchdowns while freshman Eli Pietrowski has 19 receptions for 301 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. Combs has 15 catches for 152 yards, and three scores while Marc Warren has 13 receptions for 212 yards, and four touchdowns.
Kicker Jacob Baker has hit 70-of-71 PAT attempts and 8-of-9 field goal attempts.
Defensively, Zayne Hammack leads the way with 131 tackles. He also has three sacks. Israel Summers leads Corbin with eight sacks while Curry has a team-best seven interceptions. Wells has four picks while Baker has three.
Taking a closer look at Boyle County
Quarterback Sage Dawson has thrown for 1,635 yards, and 23 touchdowns. He has also thrown six interceptions.
Avery Bodner leads the way with 1,036 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. He has also thrown 260 yards and three touchdowns.
Mr. Everything Montavin Quisenberry is the most dangerous player for the Rebels.
He leads the team with 53 catches, 821 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns. He also has 945 rushing yards, and nine scores. Dawson has 514 rushing yards, and five touchdowns. Dalton Stone has found the end zone five times with 179 rushing yards while Brock Driver has 107 rushing yards, and three touchdowns.
If Quisenberry isn’t making the catches, Jakei Tarter, Avery Bodner or Keenan Stewart are.
Tarter has 20 receptions, 294 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Bodner has 22 catches for 228 receiving yards, and one score while Stewart has 23 receptions for 226 receiving yards, and one touchdown. Keep an eye on both Cole Sims, and Will Alexander. They both have three receiving touchdowns apiece.
Kicker Cole Andrews has made 60-of-66 PAT attempts while hitting 4-of-5 field goal attempts.
Stone leads Boyle County with 90 tackles while Tommy Ziesmer leads the Rebels with nine sacks.
Quisenberry, Alexander, and Stone each have three interceptions apiece.
