Payne, Gover lead South Laurel past McCreary Central

South Laurel received a balanced scoring attack during its win in the Ted Cook Classic on Saturday.

The Cardinals evened their record at 1-1 after defeating McCreary Central at home with a 66-47 decision.

Parker Payne led the way with a 19-point scoring effort while Eli Gover knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points. Jordan Mabe added 12 points while Max Fullmer added seven points while Ashton Garland tallied five points.

Gover hit all of his 3-pointers in the first quarter but South Laurel trailed 15-14 entering the second quarter.

The Cardinals managed to take a 25-23 lead at halftime after Josh Steele and Fullmer both his a 3-pointer apiece while Payne and Mabe both scored baskets.

Payne added 10 points in the third quarter while Gover scored seven points to push South Laurel’s lead to, 46-36, entering the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals wrapped up the win by outscoring the Raiders, 20-11, in the final eight minutes behind Payne’s five points while Fullmer, and Mabe each added four points apiece.
